The kitchen, the centre of any home, is the gathering place for family get-togethers, cooking, and a wealth of memories. But even in the midst of the cheer and warmth, there's always a chance of a mishap resulting in a fire, which could endanger property and—more importantly—people's safety.
In fact, the kitchen is the most frequently reported room for home fire incidents, with a large percentage of these incidents beginning there. The risk of fire-related incidents increases as our homes are fitted with more sophisticated appliances, gadgets and technologies. Hence, in the design and layout of kitchens, fire safety must be given top priority.

Codes and Regulations
The primary framework for fire safety regulations in India is the National Building Code of India (NBC), published by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS). NBC 2016 is the latest iteration of the codes and incorporates the most contemporary developments in construction activities in the country.
Additionally, various state-specific fire safety rules and acts derive their foundation from the NBC, emphasising the importance of compliance at both national and regional levels. By and large, the State Fire Prevention and Fire Safety Act and Rules complement the National Building Code.
However, these codes and guidelines are formulated from a broader perspective and hence, designers need to delve deeper to understand the requirements for a space like residential kitchens.

Ensuring Fire Safety
From the standpoint of a designer, fire safety in residential kitchens is critical because it requires a comprehensive analysis of numerous components that all work together to enhance the overall functionality and safety of the area. Experts aver that designers can mitigate the risk of fire by carefully planning the placement of appliances, taking ventilation into account, and using fire-resistant materials.
Layout and Flow: People's ability to move around a kitchen is influenced by its spatial arrangement. By ensuring that cooking areas are kept well away from combustible materials and providing a layout that facilitates easy movement, the likelihood of accidents can be reduced, thereby, increasing the overall safety of the kitchen.

Selection of Materials: It's important to use long-lasting and fire-resistant materials when designing a kitchen. Selected materials must adhere to safety regulations and be able to tolerate heat without running the risk of burning. This covers the supplies for wall finishes, flooring, cabinets, and countertops.
Placement of Appliances: To avoid overheating and lower the possibility of unintentional contact with flammable materials, cooking appliances, such as stoves, ovens, and microwaves should be placed in such a way that there is enough space between them. The heat exchange and release should be thoroughly planned in the case of built-in appliances.
Storage of Combustible Items: Making dedicated provisions for storing combustible items like cooking oils and cleaning supplies promotes safe storage procedures. The storage should be planned away from the heat sources and out of direct sunlight.
Ventilation systems: Proper ventilation is essential for releasing heat, steam, and residues from cooking. Effective ventilation systems that improve air quality and help remove potentially combustible materials from the kitchen environment should be included in kitchen design.

Electrical Safety: All wiring, outlets, and electrical systems must adhere to electrical safety regulations. To avoid electrical shocks, ground fault circuit interrupters, or GFCIs should be used in areas close to water sources. Further, the users should be made aware of routine maintenance and inspection requirements of electrical appliances.
Lighting fixtures should be installed away from heat sources and in compliance with safety regulations. Further provisions of adequate lighting must be made since improved visibility will automatically reduce the likelihood of accidents.
Fire-suppression systems: While installing fire suppression systems is indispensable in commercial kitchens, for a complete peace of mind these can be considered for a residential kitchen as well. These systems can swiftly put out or control a fire. Examples of these include automatic sprinkler systems and speciality kitchen hood suppression systems.
